The Motability Scheme allows disabled people (driving or not) to lease a brand new car, wheelchair assisted vehicle (WAV), mobility scooter or powered wheelchair. If you need adaptations to your vehicle, the Motability Scheme covers that as well.
If you claim any of the below benefits, you must be receiving the higher or ‘enhanced’ rate of the mobility component and your award must have at least 12 months left on it in order to be eligible for the scheme:
• Personal Independence Payment
• Disability Living Allowance
• Adult Disability Payment (Scotland only)
• Child Disability Payment (Scotland only)
• Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (Scotland only)
You can apply here.
Note that you will need to visit a dealer to order your new car, WAV, mobility scooter, wheelchair or adaptations.
If you applied online, you’ll need to bring to the dealer:
- UK passport or driving license for the appointee or customer applying
- National Insurance Number or Customer Reference Number of the person receiving the allowance
If you’re applying for Motability at the dealer, you’ll need to bring:
- UK passport or driving license for the appointee or customer applying
- National Insurance Number or Customer Reference Number of the person receiving the allowance
- Driving licences for all drivers and any claims history details
- Drivers declaration (if the driver is not present)
- Grant award letter (if applicable)
Update
From 1st July 2026, a range of changes will be coming to Motability:
- Drivers under 30 will be required to have a mandatory black-box fitted. It is called ‘Drive Smart‘, and has been introduced to make driving safer.
- Motability is reducing the standard mileage allowance to 10,000 per year (30,000 miles per 3-year lease).
- Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) will have a total mileage allowance of 50,000 per 5-year lease.
- Excess mileage will be 25p per mile including standard rate VAT – miles over the allowance will be paid for at the end of your lease.
- Tyre replacements will now be limited to 6 tyres per 3-year lease, and 4 for damage.
- For EU travel, an admin fee and VE103 certificate are now required.
- VAT and will now apply for certain advance payments for vehicles, meaning average advance payments are expected to rise upwards of £400.
- Note that these changes will affect new customers to the scheme, not those with existing leases.
