An Introduction
I’m Logan, and for a long time I’ve debated sharing my own experiences and perspective as a disabled person, due to thinking it wouldn’t make a difference. I had always hoped that I would find a place where I could hear from people who were just like me, so I didn’t feel so alone. I think I’m finally ready to build the space I needed when I was younger!
I’ve started this blog because I realised there is a huge gap in the amount of support, resources and guidance that’s available to disabled people. This shouldn’t be the case; there should be readily available information that’s accessible to anyone that needs it – this is my goal!
A Bit of Background
Growing up, I wasn’t given a lot of information on the kinds of support that was out there for someone with my conditions. Anything that my parents and I did find, we had to fight and push for me to have it.
There’s so much that I didn’t understand about my disabilities – the way that they work, how they would affect me as I get older – I had no way of accessing further information, or even knowing where to look in the first place. Teachers, physios, doctors and therapists didn’t know the best way to support me as an individual, since their own knowledge was not that much better than mine, and so I dealt with this by managing with as little support as I could. This led to a lot of internalised ableism and constantly pushing myself to ‘fit in’ to a neurotypical, able-bodied world – which, as you can imagine, caused a lot of pain, distress, and intense burnout – which I still deal with today (but I’m working on getting better!). It’s not just the physical side of disability that needs to be seen, but the mental and emotional sides are just as important too.
As an adult, I know a lot more about my conditions than I used to. I do my best to work with myself rather than against myself, I work with professionals that understand me and my needs, which has helped me bolster my support network.
The Goal
For any able-bodied people that come across this space, my hope is that you find more knowledge than you came with, and perhaps more of an understanding of the intricacies and complexities many disabled people go through on a day-to-day basis, from one guys’ experience.
For any disabled people who may find this space. know that this is a safe space for you, and I really hope you can find whatever you need here; whether that be finding and accessing support, guidance, or even just someone who knows what you’re going through (or at least can empathise with how crap it is!).
On this blog you can expect me to cover topics such as: living with a disability (or multiple, in my case!), available support/schemes in the UK, growing up diagnosed and undiagnosed, reviews for products and aids I’ve used myself, as well as covering the more amusing side of disability from my own perspective (if you can’t laugh at/with yourself, then what can you do?!). Soon there will be a shop to pair with this and even some social media channels that I’m very excited about!
Thank you for taking the time to read this post, I hope that you will stick around to see where this blog goes! (My writing should improve as time goes on as well…)
L.
